The Singing bowl is a music installation that works with lullabies and similar sounds from across the world.
The installation is based on a large Tibetan singing bowl, and has lines from lullabies in a range of different languages emanating from the central point. Hidden within the walls of the bowl was a sound systems that facilitated the piping of music around the bowl. The ‘audience’ walked into a space and listened to sounds/music that brought back childhood memories and/or evoked a sense of wellbeing, rest, peace, sleep and early childhood memories.
The music was a specially composed piece lasting around 15 minutes that included sounds and lullabies gathered from participants in a range of community project based on lullabies. This music was played in a continuous loop around the bowl.
The installation was created by Hilli McManus and the soundscape was created, developed and actualised by Duncan Chapman.
